Reiki (pronounced ray-kee) is an alternative energy therapy based on Japanese beliefs of the universal life force being transferred through one individual to another. Reiki targets and helps to remove blockages in the body improving the flow of energy throughout the body. Reiki can enable deep relaxation, reduce pain, assist with the body’s own healing process, reduce symptoms of stress such as chronic pain and headaches, and help to develop emotional, mental and spiritual well-being.
During a session the receiver is fully clothed lying on a table or sitting in a chair. The practitioner lightly places their hands on, or holds them just above, the receiver’s body. The flow of energy typically starts at the head and moves progressively down the body to the feet. More time may be spent on certain areas of the body depending on the intention the receiver has set for the session, or where the practitioner feels there is a blockage in energy flow.
Sessions can last between 60 and 90 minutes. The number of sessions will vary, depending on what the receiver wishes to accomplish. At the end of a session the receiver will typically feel a deep sense of relaxation.
